How to fix the Dallas Cowboys

So what are the problems facing this Cowboys team? As I see it, there are five glaring issues with the team.

(1) Wade Phillips. First and foremost is the coach. Wade has never won a playoff series and is far too much of a players coach to succeed in the NFL. Even some of his players were suggesting they need a coach that will tear a strip into the team. That isn't Wade's style. Of course out coaching your opponent and success in the postseason isn't his style either.

(2) Their offensive line is not as good as they were made out to be. Before the season everyone was touting just how big, powerful the line was. Even Sports illustrated did an article heaping praise on the Cowboys 1200 pounds of offensive talent. Instead Romo has taken a beating this season and the running game has either been dominant or non-existent.

(3) Terrell Owens is slowly getting more and more unhappy ... never a good sign. Also teams have learned that by sticking a DB in his face and jamming Owens at the line of scrimmage you can control him. Terrell has lost a step so teams are not as concerned about him beating you deep.

(4) Tony Romo is turning the ball over far too much. He has committed at least one turnover in 20 of his past 21 games (23 interceptions and five fumbles lost).

(5) The corner back duo of Terence Newman and Anthony Henry are just not getting it done. Newman missed yesterday’s game with injuries while Henry was getting burnt so badly against the Cardinals you would have thought he had bet the over. Both have looked lost in man to man coverage.

So how does the team turn it around?

(1) Fire Wade Phillips and promote offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. No one knows if Garret is ready but we do know that Philips is not the man for the job.

(2) Simply the offence. But the ball in Marion Barber's hands and have a minimum of 30 rushes a game by Barber and Felix Jones (when he comes back from his injury). Linemen love to run block, big fat lineman love to run block. Take away some of the responsibility to win games away from Romo and put it back to the strength of this team. Finally running the ball means longer drives which keeps the Cowboys defence off the field.

(3) Trade Terrell Owens. The milk is getting sour between Owens and the Cowboys. Did you see him yell at Andre Gurode after Romo fumbled the ball away? That isn't Owens job to admonish his teammates, that's for the coaching staff or for Romo to do. Jason Witten is the best receiver on the team. Patrick Crayton is rebounding nicely from his drops in the playoffs last year and Miles Austin has shown great big play potential. The Cowboys need to be a run first team, something you can't do with Owens on the roster.
