To Retire Or Not To Retire; That Is The Question

When the whole Brett Favre situation started to unfold, I wanted to write a little piece on my thoughts about professional players and their retirements. I didn't however, because I couldn't find anything of substance to back my argument. That was until I came across an article on nhl.com.

My belief has always been that if a player isn't 100% sure he wants to stop playing the sport he loves, then he shouldn't. If a player is iffy, ala Teemu Selanne, Joe Sakic, Mats Sundin, Brett Favre, etc. then that means they still have the passion and a lit flame burning inside, pushing them to achieve a personal goal.

For that reason, I blame Brett Favre for putting himself and the Green Bay Packers in the situation they're currently in. At the end of their season, Green Bay came up to Brett and told him they needed to know by a certain time what his plans were so they could plan out their off season. So, what did Favre do? He ignored his true feelings that he still wanted to play professional football and win another championship and said he was retiring. When the news broke that Brett was retiring, I was shocked. I figured after their loss to the Giants that he would have a feeling of unfinished business and comeback and make another run for the Super Bowl with the Packers. Looks like after a few months Mr.Favre did in fact have this feeling.

I guess the only good thing about the Brett Favre situation is that Teemu Selanne, Joe Sakic and Mats Sundin have all learned something from it. Something that, as I stated before, have always believed and something two future HHOF members, Steve Yzerman and Joe Nieuwendyk, believe as well.

"If you're not 100 per cent certain that you don't want to play anymore, then the decision is that you should be playing."
