Tiger Woods vs. The NHL

"I don't really care, let's talk about the Dodgers. I don't think anybody really watches hockey any more."
-Tiger Woods comment on the NHL Playoffs during a recent PGA conference call.

Now I know a lot of Canadians are upset by Tiger's comments. When it comes to hockey we are an insecure lot who feel the need to defend the game at every turn. We’ve had to endure a lock-out, a crummy TV deal on a channel no one knows about and we’ve seen Dog Shows get better ratings than the NHL.
But with the Penguins and the Red Wings in the finals the game of hockey was starting to win back some of the sporting spot light in the States. Just when it looked like the good times were back Tiger Woods had to ruin the party.
And you know what I'm glad he did.
It was the first time, in a long time, he sounded like a sports fan and not a corporate machine. When was the last time you heard Tiger say something that didn't sound scripted? I'm sure if you checked you could find a transmitter inside his throat to ensure he says nothing that could hurt the value of Nike's stock.
But this time was different. He was asked a simple sports question and gave a simple sports answer. He would rather talk about his under achieving Dodgers than a game he couldn't care less about. It was an honest answer and honestly I'm glad he gave it.
It reminds me of the furor Cleveland fans felt after Lebron James wore a Yankee cap to Game One of the Indians playoff series vs. New York.
I think that we forget that deep down most athletes are still sports fans. So it was actually nice to see Tiger speak off the cuff.
Of course I'm sure Gary Bettman has his own opinion on that one.

Jeez Tiger....sorry it took you 3 months to get over that minor knee surgery. I keep forgetting about those hockey players who take a slap shot in the face and are back out for their next shift. Tiger...I am sick and tired of hearing about you and how good you apparently are. Get off your high horse and back into reality, you are not all you are supposed to be. You are a loser Tiger...plain and simple..

Does Tiger Woods believe that everyone is watching him instead ? Not me, when I see him with his buddy Johnney Miller announcing, I ask, where's the Hockey game ??

Next time Tiger has a putt to win a major I want to see him do it at 40 miles an hour, with someone guarding the cup...oh yeah and 5 finely tuned athletes trying to put him into next week....if he can make that one then I'll be ready to concede he is the best athlete in the world...until then "go Crosby & Datsyuk et al!!

Tiger is right, what are we doing playing hockey in June ? I played hockey until I was 40 but give it a break. There are enough sports that overlap. Even golf is overdone and never seems to have a beginning and and end to its season. How much sports can you watch? In September, you have Hockey, baseball, football, golf, and on and on. Give it a break sports fans, take your wife out for dinner and see a movie and preferably not a sports movie.

Can't add much, except to say kudos to Ron's comment - I love sports, but I'd rather play than watch -any day of the week. These fanatical fans who get all worked up are the ones who never lace up the blades or break a hundred on the golf course. Some of the greatest athletes of all time are often the softest spoken, Woods included. And who do we give audience to? The beer-bellied, potato chip gorging slobs with painted faces and armchairs.
